1st Reading

18:42b-45a

A reading from the first book of Kings

Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel and bowed down to the earth, putting his face between his knees. ‘Now go up,’ he told his servant, ‘and look out to the sea.’ He went up and looked. ‘There is nothing at all’ he said. ‘Go back seven times’ Elijah said. The seventh time, the servant there is a cloud, small as a man’s hand, rising from the sea.’ Elijah said, ‘Go and say to Ahab, “Harness the chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
And with that sky grew dark with cloud and storm, and rain fell into torrents.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm

14:1,2-3,4

R. Draw us after you, Virgin Mary; we shall follow in your footsteps.

Lord, who shall be admitted to your tent;
And dwell on your holy mountain.

R. Draw us after you, Virgin Mary; we shall follow in your footsteps.

He who walks without fault;
He who acts with justice
And speaks the truth from his heart;

R. Draw us after you, Virgin Mary; we shall follow in your footsteps.

He who does not slander with his tongue;
He who does no wrong to his brother,
Who cast no slur on his neighbor.

R. Draw us after you, Virgin Mary; we shall follow in your footsteps.

Who holds the godless in disdain,
But honors those who fear the Lord.

R. Draw us after you, Virgin Mary; we shall follow in your footsteps.

2nd Reading

4:4-7

A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Galatians

When the appointed time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law and to enable us to be adopted as sons. The proof that you are sons is that God has sent the Spirit of his Sons into our hearts: the Spirit that cries, ‘Abba, Father’, and it is this that makes you a son, you are not a slave anymore; and if God has made you son, then he has made you heir.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Sequence (ad libitum)

Flower of Carmel
Blossoming, bearing one,
Light of heaven,
Mother of God’s dear Son,
Vine and virgin

Gentle parent,
Pure beyond human love,
Bless your children,
Star shining far above
This world’s ocean.

Alleluia, Alleluia.

Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

Alleluia, Alleluia.

Gospel

19:25-27

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, “Woman, this is your Son.’ Then to the disciple, he said, “This is your mother.” And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home.

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of
the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right
hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the
Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in One, Holy,
Catholic and Apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism
for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to
the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.

Amen.
