O Come, O Come Emmanuel

O come, o come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel!

O come, O wisdom from on high who ordered all things mightily
to us the path of knowledge show and teach us in her ways to go.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel!

O come, Thou dayspring from on high, and cheer us by your drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadow put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel!

1st Reading

2 Sm 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16

A reading from second Book of Samuel

When King David was settled in his palace,
and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side,
he said to Nathan the prophet,
“Here I am living in a house of cedar,
while the ark of God dwells in a tent!”
Nathan answered the king,
“Go, do whatever you have in mind,
for the LORD is with you.”
But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said:
“Go, tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD:
Should you build me a house to dwell in?

“‘It was I who took you from the pasture
and from the care of the flock
to be commander of my people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you went,
and I have destroyed all your enemies before you.
And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.
I will fix a place for my people Israel;
I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place
   without further disturbance.
Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old,
since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel.
I will give you rest from all your enemies.
The LORD also reveals to you
that he will establish a house for you.
And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors,
I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins,
and I will make his Kingdom firm.
I will be a father to him,
and he shall be a son to me.
Your house and your Kingdom shall endure forever before me;
your throne shall stand firm forever.’”

The word of the Lord.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm

℟. (2a) For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

The favors of the LORD I will sing forever;
through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness.
For you have said, “My kindness is established forever;”
in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.

℟. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

“I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
I have sworn to David my servant:
Forever will I confirm your posterity
and establish your throne for all generations.”

℟. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

“He shall say of me, ‘You are my father,
my God, the rock, my savior.’
Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him,
and my covenant with him stands firm.”

℟. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

Alleluia, Alleluia.

O Radiant Dawn,
splendor of eternal ligt, sun of justice:
come and shine on those who dwell in daarkness and in the shadow of death.

Alleluia, Alleluia.

Gospel

Lk 1:67-79

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:

“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
for he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty Savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:

The Gospel of the Lord.

All reply:

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Then he kisses the book, saying quietly:

Through the words of the Gospel
may our sins be wiped away.

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sa takdang panahon ay

Gabay ng Iyong bayang hinirang
ang pag-asa sa Iyong Mesiyas;
“Emmanuel” ang pangalang
bigay sa Kanya:
“Nasa atin ang D’yos tuwina.”

Halina, Hesus, halina!
Halina, Hesus, halina!

Isinilang S’ya ni Maria,
Birheng tangi, Hiyas ng Judea;
at “Hesus” ang pangalang bigay sa Kanya:
“Aming D’yos ay Tagapagadya.”

Darating muli sa takdang araw,
upang tanang tao’y tawagin
at sa puso Mo, aming Ama’y
bigkisin sa pag-ibig na di mamaliw.

Halina, Hesus, halina!

Canticle of Zachary
Michael Joncas

Blest be the God of Israel,
the ever-living Lord,
who comes in pow’r to save
his own, his people Israel.
For Israel he raises up
salvation’s tow’r on high.
In David's house who reigned
as king and servant of the Lord.

Through holy prophets did
he speak his word on days of
old, that he would save us
from our foes and all
who bear us ill.
To our ancestors did he give
his covenant of love,
so with us all he keeps
his word in love that
knows no end.

Of old he gave his solemn
oath to Father Abraham;
His seed a mighty race
should be and blest
forevermore.
He vowed to set his people
free from fear of ev’ry foe
That we might serve him
all our days in goodness,
love, and peace.

O tiny child, your name shall
be the prophet of the Lord;
The way of God you shall
prepare to make his coming
known.
You shall proclaim to Israel
salvation’s dawning day,
when God shall wipe away all
sins in his redeeming love.

The rising sun shall shine on
us to bring the light of day
when God shall wipe away
all sins in his redeeming love.
The rising sun shall shine on
us to bring the light of day
To all who dwell in
darkest night and shadow
of the grave.
Our footsteps God will safely
guide to walk the
ways of peace;
His name forever more
be blest, who lives and loves
and saves.

Proclaim the Joyful Message
James V. Marchionda, O.P.

Proclaim the joyful message that our God
is coming to earth.
Let the valleys be filled and the mountains made low
preparing for His holy birth.

He will come in the spirit of wisdom, to bring the world justice and right.
The poor and the lowly
will know him, for the
Lord will be their light.

Proclaim the joyful message that our God
is coming to earth.
Let the valleys be filled and the mountains made low
preparing for His holy birth.

Soon God’s creatures
will all live together.
The wolf will be guest
of the lamb.
The calf will walk next to the lion
and be led by the child’s hand.

Proclaim the joyful message that our God
is coming to earth.
Let the valleys be filled and the mountains made low
preparing for His holy birth.

Soon the mountain of God
will be holy, all war and destruction will cease.
The earth will be filled with
the wisdom of the coming
Prince of Peace.

Proclaim the joyful message that our God
is coming to earth.
Let the valleys be filled and the mountains made low
preparing for His holy birth.
