Second Sunday of Lent
God of mercy and compassion,
look with pity upon me,
Father, let me call thee Father,
this thy child returns to Thee.
Jesus Lord, I ask for mercy;
let me not implore in vain;
all my sins, I now detest them,
never will I sin again.
By my sins I have deserved
death and endless misery.
Hell with all its pains and
torments and for all eternity.
Jesus Lord, I ask for mercy;
let me not implore in vain;
all my sins, I now detest them,
never will I sin again.
By my sins I have abandoned,
right and claim to heav’n above.
Where the saints rejoice forever
in a boundless sea of love.
Jesus Lord, I ask for mercy;
let me not implore in vain;
all my sins, I now detest them,
never will I sin again.
See our Savior, bleeding, dying,
on the cross of Calvary;
to that cross my sins have
nailed Him, yet He
bleeds and dies for me.
Jesus Lord, I ask for mercy;
let me not implore in vain;
all my sins, I now detest them,
never will I sin again.
Come back to me
with all your heart.
Don't let fear keep us apart.
Trees do bend,
though straight and tall;
so must we to others' call.
Long have I waited
for your coming
home to me and living
deeply our new life.
The wilderness will lead you
to your heart
where I will speak.
Integrity and justice
with tenderness you shall know.
Long have I waited
for your coming
home to me and living
deeply our new life.
You shall sleep secure
with peace; faithfulness
will be your joy.
Long have I waited
for your coming
home to me and living
deeply our new life.
Psalmody
PSALMODY
Ant. 1 The right hand of the Lord has shown its power; the right hand of the Lord has raised me up.
Psalm 118
Song of joy for salvation
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, *
for his love endures forever.
Let the sons of Israel say: *
“His love endures for ever.”
Let the sons of Aaron say: *
“His love endures for ever.”
Let those who fear the Lord say: *
“His love endures for ever.”
I called to the Lord in my distress; *
he answered and freed me.
The Lord is at my side; I do not fear. *
What can man do against me?
The Lord is at my side as my helper: *
I shall look down on my foes.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord *
than to trust in men:
it is better to take refuge in the Lord *
than to trust in princes.
The nations all encompassed me; *
in the Lord’s name I crushed them.
They compassed me, compassed me about; *
in the Lord’s name I crushed them.
They compassed me about like bees; †
they blazed like a fire among thorns. *
In the Lord’s name I crushed them.
I was hard-pressed and was falling *
but the Lord came to help me.
The Lord is my strength and my song; *
he is my savior.
There are shouts of joy and victory *
in the tents of the just.
The Lord’s right hand has triumphed; *
his right hand raised me.
The Lord’s right hand has triumphed; †
I shall not die, I shall live *
and recount his deeds.
I was punished, I was punished by the Lord, *
but not doomed to die.
Open to me the gates of holiness: *
I will enter and give thanks.
This is the Lord’s own gate *
where the just may enter.
I will thank you for you have answered *
and you are my savior.
The stone which the builders rejected *
has become the corner stone.
This is the work of the Lord, *
a marvel in our eyes.
This day was made by the Lord; *
we rejoice and are glad.
O Lord, grant us salvation; *
O Lord, grant success.
Blessed in the name of the Lord *
is he who comes.
We bless you from the house of the Lord; *
the Lord God is our light.
Go forward in procession with branches *
even to the altar.
You are my God, I thank you. *
My God, I praise you.
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good; *
for his love endures for ever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm Prayer
Lord God, you have given us the great day of rejoicing: Jesus Christ, the stone rejected by the builders, has become the cornerstone of the Church, our spiritual home. Shed upon your Church the rays of your glory, that it may be seen as the gate of salvation open to all nations. Let cries of joy and exultation ring out from its tents, to celebrate the wonder of Christ’s resurrection.
Ant. The right hand of the Lord has shown its power; the right hand of the Lord has raised me up.
Ant. 2 Let us sing the hymn of the three young men which they sang in the fiery furnace, giving praise to God.
Canticle: Daniel 3:52-57
Let all creatures praise the Lord
(Romans 1:25).
Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers, *
praiseworthy and exalted above all forever;
And blessed is your holy and glorious name, *
praiseworthy and exalted above all for all ages.
Blessed are you in the temple of your holy glory, *
praiseworthy and glorious above all forever.
Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom, *
praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.
Blessed are you who look into the depths †
from your throne upon the cherubim, *
praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.
Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven, *
praiseworthy and glorious forever.
Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord, *
praise and exalt him above all forever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. Let us sing the hymn of the three young men which they sang in the fiery furnace, giving praise to God.
Ant. 3 Praise the Lord in his heavenly power.
Psalm 150
Praise the Lord
Praise God in his holy place, *
praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his powerful deeds, *
praise his surpassing greatness.
O praise him with sound of trumpet, *
praise him with lute and harp.
Praise him with timbrel and dance, *
praise him with strings and pipes.
O praise him with resounding cymbals, *
praise him with clashing of cymbals.
Let everything that lives and that breathes *
give praise to the Lord.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm Prayer
Lord God, maker of heaven and earth and of all created things, you make your just ones holy and you justify sinners who confess your name. Hear us as we humbly pray to you: give us eternal joy with your saints.
Ant. Praise the Lord in his heavenly power.
1st Reading
Gn 12:1-4a
A reading from the Book of Genesis
The LORD said to Abram:
“Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk
and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.
“I will make of you a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
so that you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you
and curse those who curse you.
All the communities of the earth
shall find blessing in you.”
Abram went as the LORD directed him.
Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
℟. (22) Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
Upright is the word of the LORD,
and all his works are trustworthy.
He loves justice and right;
of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.
℟. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him,
upon those who hope for his kindness,
To deliver them from death
and preserve them in spite of famine.
℟. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
Our soul waits for the LORD,
who is our help and our shield.
May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us
who have put our hope in you.
℟. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
2nd Reading
2 Tm 1:8b-10
A reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy
Beloved:
Bear your share of hardship for the gospel
with the strength that comes from God.
He saved us and called us to a holy life,
not according to our works
but according to his own design
and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began,
but now made manifest
through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus,
who destroyed death and brought life and immortality
to light through the gospel.
Thanks be to God.
Glory to You,
Lord Jesus Christ,
Son of the Living God.
From the shining cloud the Father’s voice was heard:
This is my beloved Son, hear him.
Glory to You,
Lord Jesus Christ,
Son of the Living God.
Gospel
Mt 17:1-9
✠ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother,
and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them;
his face shone like the sun
and his clothes became white as light.
And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them,
conversing with him.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
“Lord, it is good that we are here.
If you wish, I will make three tents here,
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, behold,
a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,
then from the cloud came a voice that said,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;
listen to him.”
When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate
and were very much afraid.
But Jesus came and touched them, saying,
“Rise, and do not be afraid.”
And when the disciples raised their eyes,
they saw no one else but Jesus alone.
As they were coming down from the mountain,
Jesus charged them,
“Do not tell the vision to anyone
until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:
The Gospel of the Lord.
All reply:
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Then he kisses the book, saying quietly:
Through the words of the Gospel
may our sins be wiped away.
The Creed is said.
Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day
our daily bread, and
forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who
trespass against us;
and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us,
deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our
daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us
from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever. Amen.

Transfigure us, O Lord,
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Break the chains that bind us;
speak Your healing word,
and where you’ll lead
we’ll follow.
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Down from heights of glory
into the depths below,
the love of God self-emptied,
the love of God to show.
You light the path before us,
the way that we must go.
Transfigure us, O Lord,
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Break the chains that bind us;
speak Your healing word,
and where you’ll lead
we’ll follow.
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Light for those in darkness,
the hungry have their fill,
glad tidings for the humble,
the healing of all ills; in these,
we glimpse your glory,
God’s promises fulfilled.
Transfigure us, O Lord,
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Break the chains that bind us;
speak Your healing word,
and where you’ll lead
we’ll follow.
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Pardon for the sinner,
a shepherd for the sheep,
a drink of living water,
for all who thirst and seek,
and feasting at Your table,
the lowly and the least.
Transfigure us, O Lord,
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Break the chains that bind us;
speak Your healing word,
and where you’ll lead
we’ll follow.
Transfigure us, O Lord.
To the holy city,
Jerusalem you go;
Your face set tow’rd the
ending, the cross to be
Your throne.
Shall we journey with you
and share your paschal road?
Transfigure us, O Lord,
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Break the chains that bind us;
speak Your healing word,
and where you’ll lead
we’ll follow.
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Transfigure us, O Lord,
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Break the chains that bind us;
speak Your healing word,
and where you’ll lead
we’ll follow.
Transfigure us, O Lord.
Have mercy on me,
O God, in Your kindness.
In Your compassion,
blot out my offense.
Wash me, O God,
from the stain of my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.
My offenses, truly I know them.
My sin is always before me.
Against You alone
have I sinned.
What is evil in Your sight,
I have done.
Have mercy on me,
O God, in Your kindness.
In Your compassion,
blot out my offense.
Wash me, O God,
from the stain of my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.
Create in me a pure heart.
Put a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away
from Your presence
nor deprive me of Your spirit.
Have mercy on me,
O God, in Your kindness.
In Your compassion,
blot out my offense.
Wash me, O God,
from the stain of my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.
Defend me, O God, my Savior.
My tongue shall sing out
Your goodness.
O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth shall proclaim
Your praise.
Have mercy on me,
O God, in Your kindness.
In Your compassion,
blot out my offense.
Wash me, O God,
from the stain of my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.
Gospel Canticle
Ant. Our Lord Jesus Christ abolished death, and through the Gospel he revealed eternal life.
Canticle of Zechariah
Luke 1:68-79
The Messiah and his forerunner
Blessed + be the Lord, the God of Israel; *
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old †
that he would save us from our enemies, *
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers *
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: *
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear, *
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; *
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation *
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God *
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. Our Lord Jesus Christ abolished death, and through the Gospel he revealed eternal life.
It’s time for us to make
our dreams come true.
A guiding voice
will tell us what to do.
It’s the time to change
ourselves and show the world
that we still care for men
and we’ll lead them there.
We’ll lead them to
a place beyond the sea.
A place of love where
everyone is free.
Don’t despair the path
to happiness is wide.
If we must change our ways
call on God for our guide.
