People, Look East
Eleanor Farjeon

People, look East.
The time is near of the
crowning of the year.
Make your house fair
as you are able.
Trim the hearth
and set the table.
People, look East, and sing
today: Love, the Guest,
is on the way.

Furrows, be glad,
though earth is bare.
One more seed is planted there;
Give up your strength the
seed to nourish, that in course
the flow’r may flourish.
People, look East, and sing
today: Love, the Rose,
is on the way.

Stars, keep the watch
when night is dim.
One more light the bowl
shall brim.
Shining beyond the
frosty weather,
bright as sun and moon together.
People, look East, and sing
today: Love, the Star,
is on the way.

Angels, announce on this
great feast: Him who cometh
from the East.
Set ev’ry peak and valley
humming with the word,
the Lord is coming.
People, look East, and sing
today: Love, the Lord,
is on the way.

Psalmody

PSALMODY

Ant. 1 Our King will come from Zion; the Lord, God-is-with-us, is his mighty name.

Psalm 51
O God, have mercy on me

Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. *
In your compassion blot out my offense.
O wash me more and more from my guilt *
and cleanse me from my sin.

My offenses truly I know them; *
my sin is always before me.
Against you, you alone, have I sinned; *
what is evil in your sight I have done.

That you may be justified when you give sentence *
and be without reproach when you judge.
O see, in guilt I was born, *
a sinner was I conceived.

Indeed you love truth in the heart; *
then in the secret of my heart teach me wisdom.
O purify me, then I shall be clean; *
O wash me, I shall be whiter than snow.

Make me hear rejoicing and gladness, *
that the bones you have crushed may revive.
From my sins turn away your face *
and blot out all my guilt.

A pure heart create for me, O God, *
put a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence, *
nor deprive me of your holy spirit.

Give me again the joy of your help; *
with a spirit of fervor sustain me,
that I may teach transgressors your ways *
and sinners may return to you.

O rescue me, God, my helper, *
and my tongue shall ring out your goodness.
O Lord, open my lips *
and my mouth shall declare your praise.

For in sacrifice you take no delight, *
burnt offering from me you would refuse,
my sacrifice, a contrite spirit *
A humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn.

In your goodness, show favor to Zion: *
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice, *
holocausts offered on your altar.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm Prayer

Father, he who knew no sin was made sin for us, to save us and restore us to your friendship. Look upon our contrite heart and afflicted spirit and heal our troubled conscience, so that in the joy and strength of the Holy Spirit we may proclaim your praise and glory before all the nations.

Ant. Our King will come from Zion; the Lord, God-is-with-us, is his mighty name.

Ant. 2 Eagerly I watch for the Lord; I wait in joyful hope for the coming of God my Savior.

Canticle: Tobit 13:8-11, 13-15
Thanksgiving for the people’s deliverance

Let all men speak of the Lord’s majesty, *
and sing his praises in Jerusalem.

O Jerusalem, holy city,
he scourged you for the works of your hands, *
but will again pity the children of the righteous.

Praise the Lord for his goodness,
and bless the King of the ages, *
so that his tent may be rebuilt in you with joy.

May he gladden within you all who were captives;
all who were ravaged may he cherish within you *
for all generations to come.

A bright light will shine to all parts of the earth;
many nations shall come to you from afar, *
and the inhabitants of all the limits of the earth,
drawn to you by the name of the Lord God, *
bearing in their hands their gifts for the King of heaven.

Every generation shall give joyful praise in you,
and shall call you the chosen one, *
through all ages forever.

Go, then, rejoice over the children of the righteous,
who shall all be gathered together *
and shall bless the Lord of the ages.

Happy are those who love you, *
and happy those who rejoice in your prosperity.

Happy are all the men who shall grieve over you, *
over all your chastisements,

for they shall rejoice in you *
as they behold all your joy forever.

My spirit blesses the Lord, the great King.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.

Ant. Eagerly I watch for the Lord; I wait in joyful hope for the coming of God my Savior.

Ant. 3 Eagerly I watch for the Lord; I wait in joyful hope for the coming of God my Savior.

Psalm 147:12-20
The restoration of Jerusalem

(Revelation 21:9).

O praise the Lord, Jerusalem! *
Zion, praise your God!

He has strengthened the bars of your gates, *
he has blessed the children within you.
He established peace on your borders, *
he feeds you with finest wheat.

He sends out his word to the earth *
and swiftly runs his command.
He showers down snow white as wool, *
he scatters hoar-frost like ashes.

He hurls down hailstones like crumbs. *
The waters are frozen at his touch;
he sends forth his word and it melts them: *
at the breath of his mouth the waters flow.

He makes his word known to Jacob, *
to Israel his laws and decrees.
He has not dealt thus with other nations; *
he has not taught them his decrees.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm Prayer

All-powerful God, it is through your Church, generously endowed with gifts of grace and fortified by the Holy Spirit, that you send out your word to all nations. Strengthen your Church with the best of all food and make it dauntless in faith. Multiply its children to celebrate with one accord the mysteries of your love at the altar on high.

Ant. Eagerly I watch for the Lord; I wait in joyful hope for the coming of God my Savior.

1st Reading

Mal 3:1-4, 23-24

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Malachi

   Thus says the Lord GOD:
Lo, I am sending my messenger
   to prepare the way before me;
And suddenly there will come to the temple
   the LORD whom you seek,
And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.
Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
But who will endure the day of his coming?
And who can stand when he appears?
For he is like the refiner’s fire,
   or like the fuller’s lye.
He will sit refining and purifying silver,
and he will purify the sons of Levi,
Refining them like gold or like silver
that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD.
Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem
   will please the LORD,
as in the days of old, as in years gone by.

Lo, I will send you
   Elijah, the prophet,
Before the day of the LORD comes,
   the great and terrible day,
To turn the hearts of the fathers to their children,
and the hearts of the children to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike
   the land with doom.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm

℟. Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand.

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;
   teach me your paths,
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my savior.

℟. Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand.

Good and upright is the LORD;
thus he shows sinners the way.
He guides the humble to justice,
he teaches the humble his way.

℟. Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand.

All the paths of the LORD are kindness and constancy
toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees.
The friendship of the LORD is with those who fear him,
and his covenant, for their instruction.

℟. Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand.

Alleluia, Alleluia.

Rex géntium et lapis anguláris Ecclésiæ:
veni, et salva hóminem quem de limo formásti.

Alleluia, Alleluia.

Gospel

Lk 1:57-66

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child
she gave birth to a son.
Her neighbors and relatives heard
that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her,
   and they rejoiced with her.
When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child,
they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,
but his mother said in reply,
“No. He will be called John.”
But they answered her,
“There is no one among your relatives who has this name.”
So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.
He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,”
   and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
   and he spoke blessing God.
Then fear came upon all their neighbors,
and all these matters were discussed
throughout the hill country of Judea.
All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,
“What, then, will this child be?
For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.”

At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:

The Gospel of the Lord.

All reply:

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Then he kisses the book, saying quietly:

Through the words of the Gospel
may our sins be wiped away.

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of
the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right
hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the
Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in One, Holy,
Catholic and Apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism
for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to
the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

A Voice Cries Out
Michael Joncas

Console my people,
the ones dear to me;
speak to the heart of
Jerusalem: the time of your
mourning is ended now,
the Lord of life will come.

A voice cries out
in the wilderness:
“Prepare a way for the Lord!”
A voice cries out
in the wilderness:
“Make straight
a highway for God!”

Ev’ry valley is made a plain,
ev’ry mountain is leveled;
the glory of God shall
then be revealed, and the
nations will sing in praise.

A voice cries out
in the wilderness:
“Prepare a way for the Lord!”
A voice cries out
in the wilderness:
“Make straight
a highway for God!”

A voice shouts “Cry!”
O what shall I cry?
All flesh is like grass
and its flowers:
the grass may wither, the flowers may fade, but the
Word of the Lord is forever.

A voice cries out
in the wilderness:
“Prepare a way for the Lord!”
A voice cries out
in the wilderness:
“Make straight
a highway for God!”

Zion, shout from the
mountain top, lift up your
voice, O Jerusalem, and say to
the people of God’s own land,
“Behold, behold your God!”

A voice cries out
in the wilderness:
“Prepare a way for the Lord!”
A voice cries out
in the wilderness:
“Make straight
a highway for God!”

Gospel Canticle

Ant. All that God promised to the virgin through the message of the angel has been accomplished.

Canticle of Zechariah
Luke 1:68-79
The Messiah and his forerunner

Blessed + be the Lord, the God of Israel; *
he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *
born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies, *
from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers *
and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: *
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear, *
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; *
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation *
by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God *
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, *
and will be for ever. Amen.
